Long ago, in the northeast of Thailand, people believed in powerful serpent beings called Nagas. These creatures lived in the Mekong River and protected the land and its people.

One famous legend tells the story of a young monk named Phra Chan. He traveled to a temple near the river to meditate. One night, while deep in meditation, he heard a loud splash. When he opened his eyes, he saw a large Naga rising from the water. It had shiny green scales and eyes that glowed like fire.

The Naga didn’t harm Phra Chan. Instead, it bowed its head and spoke. “You have a pure heart,” it said. “Please help our people live in peace.” Then, the Naga gave him a glowing stone and disappeared into the river.

The next morning, the villagers heard about the monk’s experience. They believed the Naga had blessed their village. From that day, the people lived in harmony, and the stone was kept in the temple as a sacred gift.
